Passivation
Passivation of stainless steel allows for a more passive and corrosion resistant surface. This process is performed when contaminations such as free iron, oxide scale, rust, etc. are deposited on the surface.
These contaminants are often the result of the machining and fabricating process. If left untreated, these contaminants can adversely affect the condition of the surface resulting in premature corrosion and decreased mechanical performance.
In addition to the removal of these contaminants, passivation facilitates the formation of a remarkably thin, transparent layer of oxide film. This film provides additional protection from corrosion.
Passivation treatments can maximize the corrosion resistance of stainless steel and ensure the desired performance of the component.
